A terrier standing in an English landscape, signed lower right 'J Loder Pinx.t/1846'. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame.
James Loder was born in 1784 and specialised in sporting scenes including equestrian and hunting groups, cattle, dogs and he also painted some portraits. According to Sydney H. Paviére, he was ‘well known and esteemed in his day’. His first recorded work was ‘A favourite cob’ which was subsequently made into an aquatint by G.Hunt and dated 1820. His most prolific period was in the 1830’s and 1840’s, and he spent most of his working life in Bath, Somerset in the South West of England. His son, Edwin Loder (1827-1885), was also an artist.
